The United States presents a very hypocritical approach to how it approaches drugs. Alcohol is a fundamental industry, with regular drinkers (12+ drinks a year) representing half of the population. Each year over 20,000 people in the U.S. alone die of alcohol related causes. Many drugs are prescribed as pharmaceuticals ranging from antidepressants to muscle relaxants, and many of these are used recreationally. Over the counter amphetamines are frequently used to enhance performance in the classroom and the office. Even marijuana is prescribed for glaucoma and cancer patients. What makes these drugs so different?
Frequently, race and class associations make all of the difference. Society is willing to accept these other drugs because they associate these drugs with purpose, agency, and responsibility. Combining alcohol with pharmaceuticals is as dangerous and any illegal drug, but can be done with limited repercussions.
Legalizing drugs would put all mind altering substances on an equal platform. Abuse of any substance should be discouraged, just as responsible us should be equally encouraged. Allowing citizens their own discretion in consumption promotes a sense of trust between the people and their government.
